Askew Passes VeeKay Late For 4th Straight Indy Lights Win

MADISON, Ill – Oliver Askew started on the pole for Saturday’s Indy Lights race at the World Wide Technology Raceway. It was his seventh pole in 14 starts this season. Despite that, he knew that he’d have a hard fought battle at the start with his main championship rival this season – Rinus VeeKay.

VeeKay, won the Indy Pro 2000 race here last year and needed to gain some points on Askew immediately. With starting alongside of him at the drop of the green flag, the time was now.

The Juncos Racing driver did just that too. VeeKay, pounced when the race started and got by Askew on the opening lap. He’d try to check out though but couldn’t pull too far ahead as Askew stalked VeeKay’s every move.

With 24 to go, Askew made a run at VeeKay for the lead. He’d get by and lead the final 23 laps en route to his fourth straight win and seventh of the season.

VeeKay, led the opening 52 laps but had to settle for a second place finish in his No. 21 entry. He had a bad handling race car as the race went on and even got into the wall at one point.

It was his best finishthough since a win at Road America on June 23 as he’s finished third in three of the four races entering this weekend. It was his 10th podium of 2019 though but it’s not enough to gain on Askew as he trails the Andretti Autosport driver by 52 points heading to Portland next weekend.

David Malukas would finish third in his No. 79 entry for his third straight top five and second podium of the year.

Last year’s Gateway winner Ryan Norman would bring his No. 48 entry home fourth for his fourth finish of fourth place in the last five races. He’s finished either second or fourth in seven of his last eight races of the season.

Robert Megennis rounded out the top five in his No. 27 entry to give Andretti Autosport three of the top five finishers.
