Ryan Blaney is quietly getting the job done during the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season. The Team Penske driver has scored three top 10 finishes in the last four races on the year including six in the last eight overall in his No. 12 Ford.
Despite those strong runs, he’s yet to win this season, so his playoff point bank is pretty low. That’s why he’s only 10th in the standings (+12). With only two races remaining in the opening round and 12 drivers moving onto the Round of 12, Blaney still needs some help getting there.
Richmond is the site of this weekend’s race and that’s not a strong track for him in the past. Blaney, finished 25th in the spring race and 19th in last year’s playoff race. In fact, all seven of his starts on the .75-mile oval have seen him finish 18th or worse. He’s never led a lap at Richmond either.
A finish like that could put him below the cutoff line by time the checkered flag falls on Saturday night’s race.
He needs to lean on his teammates for help. Brad Keselowski has’s finished worse than 11th in his last eight Richmond starts including eight top 10 finishes there since 2014. He’s also had six top 10 finishes in his last eight starts on the season including three top five’s in his last four starts overall.
Joey Logano hasn’t won since mid June but he does have 10 top 10 finishes in his last 11 Richmond starts including four top four’s in his last five overall.
