Both Ed Carpenter Racing Cars Shine So Far In Road America

PLYMOUTH, Wis – The Ed Carpenter Racing duo of Spencer Pigot and Ed Jones entered this weekend’s NTT IndyCar Series race at Road America as solid sleeper picks. See, in the last natural road course race of the season at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the duo both qualified up front and even finished up there too.

Also, both drivers have fared really well on the 4.014-mile Wisconsin road course during their brief careers too.

Well, now that all the preliminary action is behind us, they’re showing that the sleeper value may be a little low. They can each contend for podiums in Sunday’s REV Group Grand Prix at Road America (12 p.m. ET/NBC/INDYCAR Radio Network).

Only four Chevrolet cars made it out of the first round of qualifying on Saturday, ECR had two of them.

Pigot qualified his No. 21 Chevrolet eighth while Jones will start 11th himself in his No. 20 Chevrolet.

“It’s definitely a solid effort for everyone at Ed Carpenter Racing,” said Pigot after another top 10 starting spot. “We had a really good car this afternoon. There’s still a few things we can fine-tune on and find a bit more speed. It’s so close. A few hundredths here or there could put you in the Firestone Fast Six, but that’s INDYCAR qualifying. Overall, we can for sure race from eighth. In warmup yesterday, we did a pretty long run and felt really strong. Stronger on a long run than on one-lap pace. Hopefully that continues tomorrow as well. We know we can pass cars around this track. We’ll see if we can do that tomorrow and have a great day for our local partner Direct Supply.”

Pigot, was eighth, 13th and sixth respectively in practice too while finishing eighth in this race last year and ninth in 2016. The top 10 starting spot was Pigot’s third straight and fourth in the last five races too.

Jones, didn’t necessarily show the speed in practice this weekend but he made up for it in qualifying. He does have two top 10 finishes in as many tries in his career at Road America.

“It was a pretty good session for us considering where we were this morning,” Jones said. “It’s been a pretty tough weekend, but the team has made some good changes and kept moving forward each session. We’re still not quite where we want to be, obviously we want to be higher. It’s hard around here. Trying to make the car really strong in the low-speed corners but also not sacrificing anything in the high-speed corners is really difficult. When you get it right, it makes a big difference. Qualifying was still positive considering everything, hopefully we can make a few more changes and move forward in the race tomorrow.”

So, watch out for this group on Sunday afternoon.
