Briscoe Takes Home Rookie Of The Year Honors, Still Doesn’t Have Anything Lined Up For 2020

HOMESTEAD, Fla – Chase Briscoe is deserving of a ride in either the NASCAR XFINITY Series or the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series for 2020. Unfortunately, as of this very moment, Briscoe is unemployed.

But, I don’t think that will last long. See, the Indiana native is a Ford development driver and the manufacturer could find a place to house him next year. His best chance to succeed though would be a second season back with Stewart-Haas Racing in the NXS level.

Cole Custer is moving up to the Cup Series, so a ride is open. There could be an option for Daniel Suarez to remain with the team though and them place him in Custer’s seat. Will Ford fork the bill again for a second car with SHR, or does SHR go back to a one car effort? If they go to a single car, does the seat go to Suarez?

If it does, there’s not a lot of Ford options in NXS. Team Penske could be one but I bet Austin Cindric is back for 2020. I don’t see him moving up to Cup. I also don’t see Penske expanding to two full time NXS rides either.

Those are his best options in NXS.

In Cup, Go Fas Racing or Front Row Motorsports could have openings, but neither are competitive rides to help Briscoe develop. After all, despite winning Rookie of the Year Honors this season, I think he needs another year in NXS to grow.

Briscoe, had 26 top 10 finishes in 2019 to go along with a win at Iowa in the summer and 15 top 10 finishes over his last 17 starts in his No. 98 Ford. Among those two finishes outside of the top 10 over the second half of the year was an 11th place run in Vegas.

He just didn’t accumulate enough playoff points to compete in the Round of 8 in the playoffs to move onto the next round on points. Briscoe, had four top five finishes and six top 10’s in seven playoff races. By comparison, Christopher Bell had two top five finishes and three top 10’s. The difference was that Bell won in each round and had plenty of playoff points stacked up too.

So, would you really want to kick Briscoe to the curb if you’re Ford? What about SHR?

Briscoe said that he thinks that he showed enough in 2019 to see how badly they want him. He got into the wall on Lap 122 and still managed to come back and finish third. That came after a Stage win in the first stage too.

The kid has talent.
