INDIANAPOLIS – The momentum has shifted in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Kyle Busch, Joey Logano and Martin Truex Jr. looked like the clear cut favorites at one point of this season.
Busch and Truex have won four times a piece. Logano, has two wins himself. But, what if I told you that none of the three have won a race since June?
Kyle Busch towed to the garage after his Lap 87 engine expiring in Sunday’s Brickyard 400
Busch, had an engine expire on Lap 87 of Sunday’s Brickyard 400 and finished 37th. While he does have seven top 11 finishes in his last eight tries, he just hasn’t won. The last time was way back on June 2 (12 races ago).
At that point, Busch had four wins and nine top six finishes in 14 races. He’s failed to win since.
For Logano, his last win came a week later in Michigan. But, he’s only had two top five finishes since as his runner-up on Sunday was his first since June 30. Does that sound like a driver who can win a championship?
Truex’s last win came the race after Logano’s in Sonoma. His last three finishes heading into the playoffs are 13th, 15th and 27th respectively.
Through June, these three had won 10 of 16 races. Now, Kevin Harvick looks like the favorite. It took him 19 races to reach victory lane but he’s since won three of the last seven overall.
Harvick, started on the pole and led 118 of 160 laps in the Brickyard. His 6.118-second victory was the largest in the 26 years that NASCAR has been coming to Indy. He extended that lead in only nine laps.
Harvick, is on top of his game right now and is peaking at the right time. He heads to the playoffs with six top seven finishes in his last seven starts.
If you had to pick a champion – it’s Harvick.
