At one point this season, recently at that, Hendrick Motorsports appeared to have turned the corner in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. They started off the 2019 campaign struggling, but from Talladega in late April through Daytona earlier this month, they started to look like contenders again.
Unfortunately, after an eye opening race on June 30 in Chicago in which they finished 1-4-8-11 and 2-3 the next week in Daytona, they’ve fallen off yet again.
Chase Elliott is in the middle of another slump while Jimmie Johnson comes to the Pocono Raceway on the heels of two straight 30th place finishes. Their two teammates in William Byron and Alex Bowman have also been up-and-down but that duo expects to be much stronger this weekend in the annual return trip to the Pocono Raceway.
“Going on to Pocono I think we will have a good race there,” said Byron following another ho-hum day last weekend in New Hampshire. Byron, has had some of his best success lately with a six race stretch of four top 10’s. But, he’s only been 18th and 12th respectively the last two weeks.
Bowman, has one top 10 over his last five races including a terrible weekend in New Hampshire. He went to a backup car on Friday. He crashed it on Saturday. He had to use a third HMS car in the race, which he had to start from the back in, and finished 14th.
Like Byron, he expects to contend this weekend too.
“We will move on to Pocono and be better there,” said Bowman.
They can too. Byron, started from the pole on the Tricky Triangle in June and led 25 laps en route to a ninth place result. He has two straight top 10 finishes including a sixth place run in this race last year as well in his No. 24 Chevrolet.
Bowman, finished third in his No. 88 Chevrolet in this race last year and was 15th in June.
I would watch out for both on Sunday. They can win this thing.
