Cup Practice Rained Out On Friday, Prompts NASCAR To Cancel Quals On Saturday And Add Practice Inste
HOMESTEAD, Fla – On a day where a champion was to be crowned, Mother Nature won the day at the Homestead-Miami Speedway on Friday. Just 13 minutes into the opening NASCAR XFINITY Series practice session of the weekend, rain began to fall on the 1.5-mile track.
Unfortunately, it never really let up enough for us to see much action after. Final NXS practice, NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series qualifying as well as both Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series practice sessions were all canceled on Friday evening.
That left NASCAR with some choices to make. On slate Saturday was supposed to be just NXS and Cup qualifying followed by the NXS season finale. But, with only 13 minutes of on track time for NXS teams and no on track activity for the Cup drivers, would NASCAR alter the schedule?
They would in fact.
Nothing changes for the NXS teams as they come to Homestead with a similar package as last year, but for the Cup teams, qualifying was canceled and practice was in turn added in its place.
See, without any laps turned on track for the Cup cars, it’s really not fair to force the teams to race in Sunday’s season finale with no practice. The package is completely different than any previous year here. The tire that Goodyear brought was different too.
So, NASCAR elected to cancel single car qualifying and to allow the Cup teams to get on track for one much needed practice session. The final practice of the season will take place from 2:05 p.m. ET and conclude at 2:55 p.m. ET and air on NBCSN.
