Dane Cameron/Juan Pablo Montoya Win IMSA Race In Belle Isle

BELLE ISLE, Mich – Dane Cameron and Juan Pablo Montoya are on a roll. Heading into this weekend on the streets of Belle Isle, the Team Penske duo won the last race of the season at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in early May. This weekend, not only did they win the pole for Saturday’s Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, they also dominated the 100 minute sprint race en route to the second straight win in their No. 6 Acura.

It was also their third straight podium as well as they finished third in Long Beach too.

For Montoya, it’s his second career IMSA victory while Cameron just earned his 12th career series victory. Their team car, the No. 7 Acura, finished third to give Penske two of the three podium spots in DPi competition.

Both Ricky Taylor and Helio Castroneves rounded out the podium for their third podium in five tries this year. They’ve yet to finish worse than fifth this season.

That car though fell from the second starting spot to fourth on the first lap when John Bomarito squeezed Castroneves in the first turn. Castroneves, had to get out of the gas which allowed Felipe Nasr to get by as well. But, they’d rebound back to get onto the podium to finish third.

Nasr and his teammate Pipo Derani would remain up front and even chase down Cameron in the end but come up just short to finish second in their No. 31 Chevrolet. It was their third top two finish in five races this season including being runner-up in the season opening Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona.

The two JDC-Miller cars would finish fourth and fifth respectively.

What’s ironic is, Roger Penske puts this race on at Belle Isle and his Indy Car’s are Chevrolet powered. Chevy, is the title sponsor of this race weekend which is obviously because this race is in their own backyard. But, his cars in IMSA are powered by Acura, which is what Montoya calls a bit ironic.
