I wrote last month that I wouldn’t be surprised to see 42 cars show up and try to make the season opening Daytona 500. Now, with Tuesday’s announcement that Germain Racing will field a second car in conjunction with Premium Motorsports for Casey Mears, I can see this entry list pushing closer to 43 or 44 cars.
Think about it, we have 36 chartered teams that are guaranteed to show up. Then, we have “open” cars now of Mears, Tyler Reddick (RCR), Tanner Berryhill (Obaika), Ryan Truex (Tommy Baldwin Racing), Joey Gase (MBM Motorsports) and Brendan Gaughan (Beard Motorsports).
That’s 42 cars already.
I’ve heard rumblings that another 1-2 cars may still be coming.
NY Racing Team is likely to show up with JJ Yeley. Gaunt Brothers Racing is also rumored to have Parker Kligerman or even DJ Kennington back.
That’s 44 cars.
I don’t StarCom Racing brings out the No. 99 entry, but with a sponsorship announced already for Landon Cassill’s car, maybe they do. That would be 45.
Neverthless, unlike last year, we will have cars being sent back home after the Duels are completed. That makes next Thursday night important again as last year’s Duels were a snoozefest since everyone knew they were going to make the show.
