Yes, we have a new aero package for the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season. Yes, it’s going to be the story of the weekend for all the remaining races. But, it’s also proven that despite a new aero package, the top drivers on those tracks are still performing like nothing changed.
That’s good news for someone like Kyle Busch. It seems like it should be Busch’s turn to win a race this year. Busch, has three top six finishes in as many tries. He was runner-up in the Daytona 500 and third last week in Vegas. Now, can he take the next step up to victory lane.
The last time the NASCAR driver invaded the ISM Raceway in Phoenix, Busch was the winner. That was his fourth top three finishes in his last five tries. In fact, since the fall of 2015, Busch hasn’t finished any worse than seventh at Phoenix.
With how his season has gone in 2019, he’s got to be the odds on favorite no matter what racing package we have.
His teammates, well they could be too.
Erik Jones has three top 10 finishes in his last four Phoenix starts. The car he’s driving won the 2017 fall race at Phoenix with Matt Kenseth. Plus, Jones has two top seven finishes in three races this season.
Denny Hamlin also will be a contender. He has five top 10 finishes in his last seven Phoenix starts including a fourth place run in this race last year and a third place finish in the spring of 2016.
Martin Truex Jr. has struggled in the past at Phoenix with just two top five finishes on the 1.015-mile track since 2012, but both of them occurred in the last two years. Truex, finished third in the 2017 fall race and fifth last spring.
