As Matt DiBenedetto tries to seek a second straight contract with Toyota, he will drive one for Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR XFINITY Series race next weekend in Road America. DiBenedetto, tweeted Tuesday morning that he will be back behind the wheel of the No. 18 Toyota during the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ final weekend off before the seasons end.
GUESS WHAT?!?! I’m so dang excited to get an extra chance to do some road course racing next weekend for the @NASCAR_Xfinity race @roadamerica in the No.18 @iK9_Global Camry for @JoeGibbsRacing!! 👊🏻 — Matt DiBenedetto (@mattdracing) August 13, 2019
Jeffrey Earnhardt was originally supposed to drive in this race but he and sponsor iK9 parted way last week. Jack Hawksworth instead drove the car in Mid-Ohio last weekend.
This will be DiBenedetto’s first NXS start in three years as he ran 19 of the 33 races in 2016. It also won’t be his first Road America start as he finished 11th in 2014. In two road course starts in the Cup Series this season, he’s finished fourth (Sonoma) and sixth (Watkins Glen) respectively.
He has a great car and is a great talent so maybe he can get a big victory next weekend.
