Elliott Leads 146 Laps, Finishes With 6th Top 5 In 7 Dover Tries

Chase Elliott had all the tools that he needed to win in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series for a second straight week. Elliott, started on the pole for Monday’s rain delayed Gander RV 400 in his No. 9 Chevrolet and led the first 107 Laps. In fact, he led 146 of the first 223 laps overall.

He was well on his way to a second straight victory. Unfortunately, all the strength in his car had started to go away.

Elliott, tapered off as the second stage went on and fell to a fourth place finish at the stage break. That’s about all he had in him in the end.

For the sixth time in seven tries, Elliott finished in the top five at the Dover International Speedway, this time a fifth place run. While it wasn’t necessarily where most thought he’d be, Elliott says that his car just didn’t have enough in the end to beat Martin Truex Jr.

“We just fell off there at the end of that second Stage,” said Elliott. “That was the time of the race that we needed to be controlling it and not falling back. Just a bad time to have a bad half of a run and that is kind of what happened. So, we were fast, just not fast enough when it really mattered. … (Truex) was really good there at the end for sure. His car came on about the time I felt our car was starting to fall off. And hey, that is what pays. It was a tough race for sure. It was a very physical event, a lot of corner speed, which is hard on us for sure.”

Elliott, now heads to another track where he won at last year at the Kansas Speedway. For a driver with one top 10 finish in the first nine races of the season, the Hendrick Motorsports driver now has two in as many weeks and is heading to a track where he has two in his last three overall starts at.
