I wrote after Chase Elliott’s popular victory last weekend at the Talladega Superspeedway that his moment then could propel him to a nice string of dominance in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. See, the next two stops on the Cup Series schedule saw Elliott won the last race on them.
Well, he didn’t disappoint on Friday.
Elliott, circled the Dover International Speedway with a lap of 165.960 mph in qualifying on Friday en route to his second pole of the 2019 season and sixth of his Cup Series career. Coincidentially enough, his other pole this year came on the other concrete track on the circuit at Bristol.
This one though, was done in record shattering fashion.
Elliott’s lap was over a full mph quicker than Brad Keselowski’s (164.444 mph) that he set in this race in 2014. In fact, the entire top five of the starting lineup for Sunday’s Gander RV 400 (2 p.m. ET/FS1/MRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) all broke the preview track record set by Keselowski five years ago.
This also should make Elliott one of the favorites to win this weekend as he has a top five finish in five of his six career Cup starts on the 1-mile Delaware oval.
Joining Elliott on the front row is his Hendrick Motorsports teammate of William Byron. The second year driver qualified his No. 24 Chevrolet with a top lap of 165.555 mph. This will be the fourth time this year that HMS has swept the front row.
In fact, three of the top five starters belong to the HMS camp with Alex Bowman (164.707 mph) starting fifth in his No. 88 Chevrolet.
Chevy took four of the top five starters overall with Kyle Larson (165.464 mph) rolling off third in his No. 42 Chevrolet. Joey Logano (164.722 mph) rounded out the top five as he will start fourth in his No. 22 Ford.
The top starting Toyota is Denny Hamlin (164.151 mph) who starts eighth.
Out of the top six Rows, we have all four Hendrick cars, all three Penske’s and three Stewart-Haas Racing entries.
