Following Strong Test, AJ Foyt Racing Hoping For Improved Results This Weekend In Mid-Ohio

Tony Kanaan had high hopes for last weekend’s NTT IndyCar Series race at the Iowa Speedway. He knew how strong of a car that he’d have. The problem is, the car hasn’t been capable of running up front lately.

Since Kanaan joined AJ Foyt Racing in 2018, he’s only scored two top 10 finishes heading into last weekend’s race at Iowa. It’s not like it’s Kanaan’s fault either. The entire organization has unfortunately struggled as a whole for a long time. You can’t blame the drivers for the lack of results when it doesn’t matter what driver hops into the car and you get the same finishes.

Their last win came back in 2013 in Long Beach (112 races ago). In fact, that’s their lone victory since 2002 (284 starts). Furthermore, they have just one top five finish since the start of the 2016 season and only 14 since 2003. By comparison, Scott Dixon has 20 himself just since the start of last season.

Kanaan though, knew that Iowa was one of those races that they’d have a shot to contend. Win the race? That would be a stretch. But, just to be able to run up front was fun again.

He’d finish 10th.

Now, both he and second year driver Matheus Leist are excited to be heading back to Mid-Ohio. While the results weren’t there in 2018 (P18 and P19) a recent test gives them reason to believe that those finishes will improve for Sunday’s Honda Indy 200.

“Mid-Ohio is a fun track,” said Leist. “We had a test there a couple of weeks ago and I feel like we made some improvements with the car, which is a good sign considering we struggled there last year. I’m looking forward to doing a great race, we need some good results yet this season, so we’ll go for it.”

Kanaan, agrees.

“Mid-Ohio is always a fun racetrack,” said the popular Brazilian driver. “It’s a very challenging track. We’re coming from a pretty good race result this past weekend (at Iowa) so the team’s morale is up. We had a good test at Mid-Ohio a couple of weeks ago so I feel extremely confident we can have another good weekend. I’m looking forward to it.”

Kanaan, has had past success at Mid-Ohio before. He knows what it takes to win. AJ Foyt Racing does too. They had strong success at Mid-Ohio in 2017 following a great test before that race weekend there too.
