Stewart Friesen’s future in NASCAR past Friday night’s Ford EcoBoost 200 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway is unknown. But, the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series driver could really shore those plans up with a big night on the 1.5-mile South Florida race track.
See, Friesen is a partner in his Truck team. This is their second full time season in competition but fourth year in NASCAR overall. In 2016, they ran just six races with a best finish of 13th. In 2017, they stepped up their involvement to 19 of the 23 races. Friesen, would score a runner-up in Eldora in July of that year to go along with two top five finishes and five top 10’s overall. That led them to a full season in 2018.
Friesen, made the playoffs and finished seventh in the final standings. He’d score three more runner-ups as well as nine top five finishes as a whole and 16 top 10’s in 23 starts. They’d enter 2019 with high hopes. He’d come out of the gates with four top 10’s in five tries including three top five finishes.
By time we hit the end of July, Friesen had nine top 10 finishes, eight of which being in the top five in his first 13 starts to the season. Still, he was winless. He did have six runner-ups, but no trips to victory lane.
That all ended in Eldora on Aug. 1. He finally triumphed and his championship chase was on. Friesen, has marched through the playoffs including a win last Friday night in Phoenix to enter the season finale at the Homestead-Miami Speedway as the sleeper, but favorite to win this year’s championship.
Friesen, has two wins, 12 top five finishes and 16 top 10’s in 22 starts in 2019. He enters Homestead with 11 top eight finishes in his last 13 starts, eight of those resulting in a top five.
This is his best shot at a championship in what could be their final race together. If they win a championship, the funding could be there to come back in 2020 for another try. But, a title could also be the time for the Canada native to call it quits while on top too.
This is a feel good story that could see them celebrating on top on Friday night.
