From The Back To The Front Twice, Reddick Wins Friday Night’s Food City 300 At Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn – Tyler Reddick didn’t have to come from the back to the front once in Friday night’s Food City 300 at the Bristol (Tenn) Motor Speedway – he did it twice. The final time, was enough for Reddick to earn his fourth NASCAR XFINITY Series victory of the season and seventh of his career as he earned his first career win on the high banked Tennessee oval.

Reddick’s No. 2 Chevrolet failed pre qualifying inspection four times. That cost him his car chief as he was ejected. Not only that, Reddick wasn’t allowed to qualify either, so he’d start last in 38th. If that wasn’t enough, he’d have to serve a drive through penalty on the initial start of the race, which instantly put him a lap down.

That’s when he luck started to turn. An early race caution on Lap 7 for Mason Diaz getting into the wall, allowed Reddick to get the free pass and his lap back already. Then, a Lap 36 incident in which Matt Mills came up too high existing Turn 2 and got into Cole Custer, sparked a chain reaction crash collecting most of the heavy hitters. Custer, Christopher Bell, Joey Logano and Erik Jones were all collected.

Bell, finished three laps down in 14th. Jones, was nine laps down in 22nd at the finish. Jones and Logano couldn’t continue on in the race and would come home 36th and 37th respectively.

From there, Reddick saw an opportunity. He’d charge up through the field, so much so, he was battling Justin Allgaier for the stage win on the opening 85 laps. But, Reddick spun under Allgaier in Turn 4 on Lap 81 costing him the last to first stage win.

Then, on his ensuing pit stop, he was penalized for a safety violation. Back to the rear again. Like the first stage, he’d come back.

Kyle Busch dominated the stage in leading 78 of the 85 laps in it, but just prior to crossing the finish line first for the stage victory, his engine let go. Another heavyweight down. Busch, finished 29th as a result.

So, no Busch, Jones, Logano, Bell and Custer to deal with.

Reddick, finished second in Stage 2 and inherited the lead for eight of the next nine laps before Allgaier passed him for the lead on Lap 180. Allgaier, would lead the next 109 laps before a tire went down with 11 laps-to-go causing his No. 7 Chevrolet to skate up the banking and into the SAFER barrier.

That allowed Reddick to get by the JR Motorsports driver for the lead as he’d lead the final 11 laps en route to the victory.

The win was Reddick’s first in eight races but his sixth consecutive top five finish on the season. He’s also scored 19 top 10’s in 22 tries this year including 17 of those being top five results. Furthermore, Reddick has 16 top five finishes in his last 17 tries on the season as well.

Chase Briscoe rebounded from a seven pit stop night to bring his No. 98 Ford home runner-up for his 17th top 10 result of the year and sixth straight top seven finish of the season. He has nine top seven finishes in his last 11 starts overall. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver finished fourth in the spring race.

John Hunter Nemechek also had an eventful night in coming from the back to the front a couple of times to bring his No. 23 Chevrolet home third. Nemechek, spun on Lap 50 in Turn 2 but was able to come back to finish in the top 10 for just the second time in the last eight races.

Jeremy Clements finished an impressive fourth in his No. 51 Chevrolet for just his second top 10 of the year.

Austin Cindric rounded out the top five in his No. 22 Ford. The pole sitter only led two laps on Friday night and saw his two race win streak come to an end but did get his sixth top 10 in his last nine starts on the year.
