On Friday from the Texas Motor Speedway, Go Fas Racing announced that they have formed a technical alliance with Stewart-Haas Racing. It’s a win-win for all parties as SHR can essentially have a fifth car but not run it under their umbrella which would be against the rules while Go Fas gets the equipment and support needed to run up front.
In turn, this sets up a scenario where Cole Custer can become a full time NASCAR Cup Series driver.
See, under NASCAR rule, SHR can’t expand to a fifth team and put Custer with them next season. Right now, they have three drivers under contract to race in NASCAR’s premiere series for them in 2020 with Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer and Aric Almirola all signed. We know that they and Daniel Suarez are working on sponsorship to allow Suarez to come back for a second season next year too. If they can work out a deal, then the inn is full at SHR.
In turn, what do they do with Custer?
There’s no reason for him to drive in a fourth season in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. Custer, is ready for a Cup seat now. So far, Custer has made 101 NXS starts and has reached victory lane nine times. He also has 37 top five finishes, 68 top 10’s, 12 poles and 1,594 laps led for his career.
Just this season, Custer has won seven times to go along with six poles, 15 top fives and 21 top 10’s. He’s also led 903 laps. He’s very much a championship favorite. That doesn’t leave much more to accomplish at that level. What gain is there for him to return to his No. 00 Ford for 2020?
But, if Suarez reaches a deal, prior to Friday, Custer would have nowhere to go. You can rest assure that SHR isn’t going to let him leave them either. Now, this deal opens up a place for Custer to go if Suarez does sign with SHR for 2020.
If Suarez doesn’t, then Custer can replace him in the No. 41 Ford and Corey LaJoie can remain with Go Fas. With Chase Briscoe grooming in the NXS now, it’s a future place for him to race until another seat opens up at SHR in the future as well.
