Valtteri Bottas was well on his way to winning for the first time of his career at Silverstone on Sunday. Unfortunately for him, a caution came out which allowed his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton a chance to pounce. He’d do just that.
Hamilton, passed Bottas afterwards and cruised to a record setting sixth win on the 3.66-mile England road course as he gave his homefans something to cheer about.
It was also Hamilton’s 80th career Formula One victory, seven of which coming this season alone. He’s now won five of the last six races on the year in his No. 44 Mercedes and clearly looks like the championship favorite to three-peat.
He’s also won five of the last six races in the British Grand Prix as his worst result on his hometrack since 2014 is second.
Bottas, had to settle for second in his No. 77 Mercedes for the organization’s seventh 1-2 sweep in 10 tries this year.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished third in his No. 16 Ferrari for his fourth consecutive podium finish. The Red Bull’s of Pierre Gasly and Max Verstappen finished fourth and fifth respectively as Gasly earns a season best result while Verstappen came back after contact with Sebastien Vettel near the mid race mark. Verstappen, the winner of the last race heading into this weekend, now has a top five result in all 10 races in 2019 to go along with three top five finishes in his last four England starts. Unfortunately for him, only one of those were on the podium.
Vettel meanwhile, only finished 16th for his worst finish in England since 2013. His win last year was his only podium in the last four years on British soil.
