Hamilton Sets Track Record En Route To Mercedes Front Row Lockout For Sunday’s French Grand Pr

Surprise, surprise. For the 62nd time of their career, Mercedes earned a Formula One front row lockout. This time, it’s for Sunday’s French Grand Prix (9:05 a.m. ET/ESPN).

Lewis Hamilton set a blistering lap in his No. 44 Mercedes en route to the Circuit Paul Ricard track record. The defending race winner circled the 3.630-mile race track with a time of 1:28.319-seconds for his third pole of the 2019 season. The England native was first, second and second respectively in practice this weekend as well. Also, he enters on the heels of three straight wins on the year and five in the last six races.

His teammate Valtteri Bottas will start second in his No. 77 Mercedes. The Finland native qualified with a lap of 1:28.605-seconds. Bottas, started on the front row with Hamilton last year and has five top two finishes in 2019 already. He was second in the first practice session on Friday but quickest in the other two after.

Charles Leclerc was third quickest in all three sessions this weekend and even qualified there for the 53 Lap race. Leclerc, turned in a lap of 1:28.965-seconds in his No. 16 Ferrari. His teammate of Sebastian Vettel struggled and was only seventh quick in his No. 5 Ferrari.

Max Verstappen (1:29.409-seconds) will roll off fourth in his No. 33 Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Honda while the McLaren’s of Lando Norris (1:29.418-seconds) and Carlos Sainz Jr. (1:29.522-seconds) will start fifth and sixth respectively.

Norris and Sainz have been a pleasant surprise all weekend. The rookie was seventh, fifth and seventh respectively in practice while Sainz Jr. was eighth, seventh and ninth respectively himself.
