DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – There’s starting to be a common theme during the Daytona Speedweeks. Yes, cars line up single file to move to the top of the 2.5-mile superspeedway. That’s a main theme too. But, another common theme is that Jimmie Johnson getting into people and making enemies.
Last Sunday’s Clash at Daytona had one caution for a crash. That crash was when Jimmie Johnson got into Paul Menard on Lap 55 sparking a 17 car melee.
On Thursday night in the first of two Gander RV Duels in Daytona, there was just one caution again. It involved Johnson too.
Johnson, got into the left rear quarter panel of Kyle Busch on the backstretch on Lap 25. It was a very similar incident to the way he got into Menard on Lap 55 of the Clash. Johnson, took responsibility for both incidents.
Menard, was mad but forgave him after an early Wednesday phone call. Busch, well he’s heated.
“He ran into me,” said Busch on Thursday night. “Flat out. Watch the television. You have to open your eyeballs to see where the (expletive) you’re going. That’s about all I can say.”
Busch’s crew said that they’ll likely have to go to a backup car, meaning his 18th place finish will be negated as he’ll go to the back. Johnson, finished eighth and will start 17th.
Johnson, said that he will go talk to Busch and even said on his radio after the incident that he needs to apologize. Busch, was relayed that message and said that he didn’t want to hear it and that was twice that Johnson has done that now.
