Hemric Out With RCR, Reddick Likely In

The writing was on the wall. Daniel Hemric’s option to return to his ride in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series with Richard Childress Racing in 2020 was held by the organization. While he’s the leader in the Rookie of the Year Standings, 2019 hasn’t gone exactly to plan for the North Carolina native.

Meanwhile, Tyler Reddick is hellbent on racing on the Cup level next season. He’s a driver for RCR in the NASCAR XFINITY Series and on a path to possibly win his second championship in as many years in that series.

Reddick, said that the only way that he’d return to RCR for 2020 is in a Cup seat. After all, that’s the only reason that he left JR Motorsports following his championship last year to drive for RCR this season. RCR had a Cup team, JRM doesn’t.

Reddick, just finished the NXS regular season with five wins, 20 top five finishes and 22 top 10’s in 26 starts. He honestly is ready to move up. He’s made two Cup starts in a third RCR car in 2019 and shined.

The original option for RCR would be to have kept Hemric and Austin Dillon while adding a third car back again for Reddick. Unfortunately, money got in the way.

Dillon, has two Cup wins (Coke 600 and Daytona 500) and is Richard Childress’ grandson. He’s not going to be released. They have funding for his No. 3 Chevrolet too.

Hemric, doesn’t have a ton of funding lined up so the team went with releasing him and likely adding Reddick.

Hemric, has one top five and two top 10’s this season with an average finishing position of 22.7. By comparison, Dillon has yet to score top five through 27 races this season to go along with only four top 10’s. He does have three poles though and an average finish of 20.2.

So, it’s not like Hemric was too far off of his teammate.

The problem is, Hemric did so well with RCR in the NXS level that it’s a shame he was only given one year at Cup and now released from the organization in general. While he never won a race in NXS competition, Hemric 23 top fives and 39 top 10’s in 66 starts. He was running at the finish in all but five starts.

Also, Hemric made it to the Championship 4 in both years with RCR in NXS.
