Hunter-Reay Hoping Last Year’s Belle Isle Success Going This Weekend

Ryan Hunter-Reay heads to this weekend’s Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix (3 p.m. ET/NBC/INDYCAR Radio Network) searching for speed. See, the Month of May in Indianapolis didn’t go to plan for the Andretti Autosport driver. He never was a factor on the 2.439-mile IMS road course as he left with a 17th place finish. For the oval track action, Hunter-Reay lacked speed and balance. He qualified 22nd for the 103rd Running of the Indianapolis 500 and says that he stole an eighth place finish in the end.

It wasn’t a result that he said that he earned.

Well, now it’s to a track to where he’s had some recent success at. Last year, Hunter-Reay finished second and first respectively on the streets of Belle Isle. The win on the Sunday race of the doubleheader was his first in years.

“I think it goes without saying our Detroit race weekend a year ago was a pretty special one with first- and second-place finishes – not to mention drinking champagne in the fountain,” said Hunter-Reay. “I’ve been looking forward to returning to Belle Isle for quite some time now. Hopefully, we can pick up where we left off and get this (No.) 28 DHL team back on the top step of the podium.”

Heading into this weekend, Hunter-Reay has four top eight finishes in his last five starts on the season. If you back back four years at Belle Isle too, Hunter-Reay has five top eight finishes in his last six tries on the street circuit.

Can he keep this momentum up this weekend?
