This has been a great start to the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs for Martin Truex Jr. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver won the opening two races of the postseason and was running second in the closing laps of last Sunday’s Bank of America ROVAL 400 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway before fading to seventh.
Now, can Truex earn a third victory in four playoff races this Sunday at the Dover International Speedway?
Odds say, yes.
Truex, led 132 laps in a victory on the Monster Mile back in May. He’s had five top four finishes in his last five Dover starts to go along with leading 100 or more laps in four of his last nine starts on the high banked Delaware oval.
Right now, Truex is +36 in the playoff standings, second best. He’d feel real comfortable to win the opening race of the second round, just as he did in the first.
He’s got a strong case in being able to do so. At the very least, he should contend for a top five which would give him some big comfort in terms of relief when it comes to visiting the Talladega Superspeedway next weekend.
Then, it’s to Kansas, a place where Truex swept both races in his championship winning campaign in 2017 and was second and fifth respectively on that 1.5-mile track last year.
