It shouldn’t come to a shock, but Leavine Family Racing is interested in expansion. Team owner Bob Leavine told folks in a Q&A session in Houston on Wednesday that they could possibly become a two car team for the 2020 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season.
“Yes, we are working on expanding for 2020 right now,” Leavine said during the session. “It’s just a matter of sponsorship because we can put the people on it, and we have the organization and Toyota Racing Development will support that. So yes, we are working to expand.”
The new alliance with Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing will help this. Toyota, has more drivers than room to put them on the Cup level. Christopher Bell and others are ready, but with the four driver limit capping JGR, they need somewhere to go.
Furniture Row Racing expanded to a two car team in 2017 with Erik Jones. LFR could reap those benefits.
“We were going to run two cars for this year with Daniel Suarez and a driver we selected, but that didn’t work out,” Leavine continued. “But overall, I am happy with how everything turned out. I am glad we got Matt DiBenedetto because he wanted to come here.”
