Due to some crazyness on pit road during qualifying for Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races now, NASCAR officials will begin enforcing the speed limit on pit road during qualifying sessions starting this weekend at Auto Club Speedway.
The same pit-road speed used for the race — which varies from track to track — will be used in qualifying.
The reason is obvious – safety. We’ve seen drivers sit at the end of pit road for an extended period of time then all speed away trying to jockey for position to draft. It causes some drag racing to go on.
Well, NASCAR is getting a handle on it before it gets out of hand.
A driver exceeding the pit-road speed exiting onto the track will be called back down pit road before becoming eligible to post a qualifying time.
A driver exceeding the pit-road speed returning to pit road will have his/her time posted on the previous set of qualifying laps disallowed.
