PLYMOUTH, Wis – Josef Newgarden said on Saturday that he thought that he had a third or fourth place car at Road America this weekend. Well, he was right. He qualified fourth for Sunday’s REV Group Grand Prix at Road America and would finish third in the 55 Lap race.
It was Newgarden’s 28th career NTT IndyCar Series podium to go along with his 41st top five finish and 69th top 10 result in 127 tries. The Team Penske driver now has four straight top eight finishes in as many tries on the 4.014-mile Wisconsin road course including three straight podiums in his No. 2 Chevrolet.
Newgarden, finished runner-up to Scott Dixon in 2017 after leading 13 laps. Last year, he led 50 of 55 laps in a dominating victory. This year, he didn’t lead a lap, but that’s only because Alexander Rossi led 54 of the 55 in his dominating win. Newgarden, though had to settle for second best in the next class.
His teammate Will Power finished runner-up in his No. 12 Chevrolet leaving Newgarden with a third place result. It was his third top three finish in his last four races on the season and eighth top four result in 10 tries in 2019.
By virtue of that, Newgarden holds a slim seven point lead over Rossi in the standings heading into the next race in two weeks on the streets of Toronto. Rossi, gained 18 points on Newgarden this weekend.
That has Newgarden wondering where they were that far off to Rossi this weekend. He was over 30 second behind him at the finish.
“We did what we could today with the REV Group Chevy,” said Newgarden. “I think Will (Power) and I were just trying to hold down the fort in second or third, but you know, there’s still good effort from everyone. We, obviously, had a little bit of a gap there and Andretti Autosport and Alex (Rossi) did a great job today, so we’ll go back to the drawing board. I think we need to work on our road course (performance), but good effort. “I don’t know. We have to go back and dissect it. I wish I had the answer.
“Chevy still gave us a great package and having REV Group on this weekend was really nice, so we’ll take a third for today.”
