Reddick Overcomes Rough Day To Win Saturday’s Money Lion 300 at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala – Tyler Reddick saw about anything and everything go against him in Saturday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series race at the Talladega Superspeedway. The Richard Childress Racing driver started off good in winning the first stage of the Money Lion 300.

But after that, it all went downhill from there.

Despite all that certainly went wrong during his day, Reddick overcame all of his troubles en route to a thrilling victory in the ninth race of the 2019 season.

Reddick, was being pushed by Ross Chastain down pit road on Lap 28 which cost them both, as they were penalized for speeding as a result. So, after leading 23 of the first 27 laps, Reddick had to restart the second stage from the back.

As he was making his way back up, Reddick scrapped the wall in his No. 2 Chevrolet suffering some cosmetic damage to his race car. When he hit pit road after for repairs, he ran over a jack. That caused so many problems, that he lost the draft and was just a few hundred feet of being lapped.

That’s when all his luck changed.

Reddick benefitted from a Lap 65 caution for debris which allowed him to not only remain on the lead lap, but to cycle back around with the leaders. He then made the most of it despite a badly damaged right side of his car.

After two big crashes, Reddick found himself back in the lead on Lap 102 in which he held off the field for his first win of the season and fourth of his NXS career. It was his first trip to victory lane since the 2018 season finale at Homestead which netted him the season championship as well.

He also won the $100k bonus for the Dash 4 Cash in crossing the finish line first on the high banked 2.66-mile Alabama race track.

Reddick, gives RCR their first career NXS win at Talladega and has earned a top four finish in six straight races now.

Another good story finished just 0.127-seconds behind Reddick on Saturday and that was Gray Gaulding. His No. 08 Chevrolet was strong all weekend and he capitalized with his best career finish.

Christopher Bell finished third in his No. 20 Toyota for his third top six finish in five career races at Talladega, including his Truck Series starts. Bell, also now has four top three finishes in his last five starts on the year including three of which being third place runs.

Chase Briscoe continued his hot streak with a fourth place finish in his No. 98 Ford. Briscoe, now has seven consecutive top eight finishes with three fourth place results in his last five overall starts on the year.

Austin Cindric rounded out the top five in his No. 22 Ford for his third straight top six finish and fifth in six races.

Here are my main takeaways.

NXS Championship Favorites Emerging

As you can see above, Reddick, Bell, Briscoe and Cindric are emerging as the favorites to win this year’s championship. They’ve been so good over the past two months and look the part to be battling for the title in Homestead this November.

JR Motorsports Struggles In The End

JRM had won five of the past 10 superspeedway races including a 1-2 result in Daytona back in February, but despite having good speed again this weekend, they faltered in the end.

Noah Gragson won the second stage but was spun on Lap 84. He’d finish 11th as a result.

Daytona winner Michael Annett entered this weekend with eight straight finishes inside of the top 13, but he was involved in that Lap 94 melee which sent him with a season worst 31th place finish. Luckily, he has a win already so this result doesn’t change much.

Justin Allgaier’s struggles continue. He was involved in both big ones (Lap 94 and Lap 108) and limped home to a 28th place finish in his No. 7 Chevrolet. He only has one top five finish in his last seven races on the year with three finishes of 28th or worse.

JRM has been a championship contender in this series for the last several years, but as we sit heading into May, they don’t look like they have a Championship 4 driver yet.

Chevrolet’s Strength

Chevy not only won the race, they put 13 cars in the top 16 of the finishing order on Saturday. That’s impressive. The bowties also led 87 of the 113 laps on Saturday too as they capped a dominant day with a 1-2 result.
