We didn’t think it would take Martin Truex Jr. long to get acclimiated to his new home at Joe Gibbs Racing. See, the past three years with Furniture Row Racing, his car was aligned with JGR already. Essentially, from his car to his pit crew to everything in between, it was basically a fifth JGR car.
So, to move over to JGR in general when Furniture Row folded this past offseason, wasn’t going to be a very big adjustment from Truex or his crew chief Cole Pearn.
After four races, they’re proving that true.
Truex, brought his No. 19 Toyota home second in Sunday’s TicketGuardian 500 at the ISM Raceway in Phoenix for his third top five finish in his last four starts on the 1.015-mile track. What’s incredible is, these are his only top five finishes at Phoenix since 2010.
Truex, came home third in the fall race of 2017 and fifth in this very spring race last year. Now, he moved up to second.
The runner-up was also his second runner-up in the last three weeks. He came home a close second to Brad Keselowski in Atlanta two weeks ago while having an eighth place run in Las Vegas sandwiched in between.
Overall, JGR was strong in general this weekend.
Kyle Busch was victorious after leading a race high 177 of 312 laps. Denny Hamlin finished fifth giving JGR three of the top five finishing positions.
