DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – One of the more underrated things that will be discussed leaving NASCAR Media Day on Wednesday from the Daytona International Speedway was that Martin Truex Jr. revealed just how close that Furniture Row Racing was to being shut down after the 2015 season.
Truex, cited that Furniture Row, Barney Visser’s company, was on the side of the No. 78 entry for every week in 2015. In order for Truex to remain with the team in 2016, he had to find sponsorship.
“It wasn’t anywhere in 2016,” said Truex about Furniture Row’s sponsorship the next year. “That was why. Things change.”
Truex, scored one win, eight top five finishes and 22 top 10’s in 36 races in 2015. He led 567 laps. The next year, the team and Truex found funding and formed an alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing. That propelled them to one of the top teams in the sport.
From 2016 on, Truex had 16 wins and led over 5,000 laps. He won at least four races and led over 1,000 laps in all three season. He also had 12 poles as well.
In 2017, he won eight times and won the championship.
FRR was on top of their game.
That’s why it was such a shock that less than one year later, they were shutting down. That was a big story that the defending series champions had to close up shop. The funding wasn’t there and Truex was forced to become a free agent.
This was just a story that wasn’t known that 2018 could have been 2015 for FRR.
